There are many challenges faced by high school students, and many students have had to drop out from school owing to a number of situations. This poses an even greater challenge in the career paths of such students, jeopardizing their futures. However, there are a varied number of alternatives to high school to salvage the opportunities for those students who have not graduated from high school.
The first and most common alternative is the General Educational Development (GED) certificate. This is a test that is taken by students who are above 18 years of age and entails evaluation in various subjects such as math, science, writing, history and reading. The pass mark for this test is 60%, although one reads on their own. There are a number of free Ged online courses that are of help for students who choose this alternative. The other option is the use of correspondence course which is a program offered through the Distance Education and Training Council. The students who opt for this are required to study independently and pass in the various evaluation stages. The course is very convenient as it does not need one to be at a specific location to undertake the studies. However, students must be dedicated and highly disciplined to obtain this equivalent of a high school diploma. The National External Diploma Program is another alternative of high school diploma. This encompasses two exams. The first evaluates competency in reading, math and writing as per high school standards. The second entails an expansion of the first tests; only it is availed in five special booklets which can be done in one’s own time. This alternative is suitable for adults pursuing their high school diploma. Proficiency exam is specially designed for those students who want to graduate earlier from high school. It is also the most suitable for federal civilians in employment. However, one must be at least 16 years of age in order to sit for the test. It entails testing concepts in the traditional high school subjects. One must also have enrolled for the 10th grade in high school to sit for this test. The other alternative is vocational diploma which is offered for students interested in joining particular workforces. It is basically in the form of occupational diplomas which substitute the high school ones. The National Center on Secondary Education and Transition recommends this alternative for students who want to pursue degrees. They can use this to show specialized skill in the area.
